Free alternative

Free alternative to Acrobat Pro

Acrobat Pro costs €24 a month. PdfCraft does the same job for free, in open source: you install it on your machine or a small server, and you stop paying.

Price taken from Acrobat Pro’s website (adobe.com): Acrobat Pro plan, one year commitment paid monthly, VAT included. Over a year, that is €288 that stays in your pocket.

What replaces Acrobat Pro

The main alternative

PdfCraft

🟢 Beginner⏱️ ~5 min to installSave €24/mo

PdfCraft is an open source rewrite of Acrobat, built from scratch by the ArtCraft team. You read and search your PDFs, comment on them, reorganize pages like cards (rotate, delete, insert, move), combine, extract and split documents, fill in and create forms, protect with a password and redact sensitive details. MIT or Apache 2.0 license, free on Mac, Windows and Linux, with no account and no cloud: your PDFs never leave your machine. The catch: it is an alpha, which the team rates 55% ready for everyday work. Editing existing text is still fragile, it cannot create a PDF from Word, and its OCR does not read accented letters yet.

Loucash’s verdict on PdfCraft

6/10

After PhotoCraft and the others, the same team takes on PDFs. Read, comment, reorganize pages, combine, split, fill in a form, protect or redact a document: the essentials of Acrobat are there, with no account and no cloud, and your PDFs never leave your machine. What may bite: it is an alpha, started in late September. The team itself rates it 55% ready for everyday work: editing the text of a PDF is still fragile, it cannot create a PDF from Word, Word export loses the layout, and OCR does not read accented letters yet. To read, comment on and sort your PDFs, it is worth a try. To convert Office files or edit a contract, keep Acrobat for now.

Who it is for: You read, comment on, sign and sort PDFs, you combine invoices or fill in forms, and you pay for Acrobat mostly for that. If you convert Word, Excel or PowerPoint files, or you often edit the text of your PDFs, keep Acrobat for now.

The prompt that installs PdfCraft

Paste this prompt into Claude: it checks the repository, asks you its questions and installs the tool step by step.

Review the GitHub repository and check whether it is safe to install given my machine and my infrastructure. Ask me as many questions as possible, using widgets, to clarify my request and be as precise as you can.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Acrobat cost?
Acrobat Reader: €0; Acrobat Standard: €19 a month; Acrobat Pro: €23.99 a month; Acrobat Studio: €31 a month. Prices checked on 19 October 2026 on adobe.com.
Is Acrobat free?
Partly, with limits. Acrobat Reader, the free app, lets you read, print, comment on, fill in and sign PDFs, on desktop and mobile. Editing, converting and organizing need a subscription. Beyond that, the Acrobat Standard plan costs €19 a month. PdfCraft does the same thing for free, in open source.
What is the free equivalent of Acrobat Pro?
PdfCraft, an open source rewrite of Acrobat (MIT or Apache 2.0 license): reading and search, comments, page organization, combining and splitting, forms to fill in or create, passwords and redaction. Free on Mac, Windows and Linux, with no account. It is an alpha: editing existing text is still fragile, and it cannot create a PDF from Word.
Can you buy Acrobat without a subscription?
Yes, as a one time purchase: Acrobat Pro 2024 gives three years of access to Acrobat on desktop, with security updates but no new features or online services. Adobe stopped selling perpetual licenses after Acrobat 2020. PdfCraft is free, with no subscription.
Is PdfCraft really free?
Yes. PdfCraft is open source: the code is public and installing it costs nothing. At most you pay for hosting if you put it on a server, often a few euros a month. Acrobat Pro, on the other hand, costs €24 a month.
Do I need to code to install PdfCraft?
No. The level is beginner and the install takes about 5 minutes with the prompt from the page: Claude does the work, you answer its questions.
How is it different from Acrobat Pro?
PdfCraft does most of what Acrobat Pro does, without a subscription, and your data stays with you. The point by point comparison is on the page.
Do I own my data?
Yes. With an open source tool installed on your side, your files stay on your machine or your server. Nobody can close your account or change the price.
