What replaces Supabase

The main alternative

Appwrite

🟡 Intermediate⏱️ ~20 min to installSave €22/mo

Appwrite is a complete backend for your web and mobile apps, the closest thing to Supabase you will find in open source. All in one console: user accounts, a PostgreSQL database, file storage, functions in Node, Python, PHP or Go, email, SMS and push notifications, realtime and hosting for your site. A wizard imports your Supabase or Firebase project, and Claude Code can create your tables through its MCP server. On your own server it is free and unlimited, under a BSD licence: one Docker command, at least 2 cores and 4 GB of memory. On Appwrite Cloud, the free plan goes up to 75,000 monthly active users and 2 projects, and the Pro plan costs about €21 a month. Careful: on the free plan, your projects are paused after a week without activity.

Loucash’s verdict on Appwrite

8/10

If you are leaving Supabase, this is the most complete alternative I have seen. Since version 2, Appwrite runs on PostgreSQL by default, and it goes further than Supabase on one point: email, SMS, push notifications and site hosting live in the same console. What I like: the MCP server. Claude Code creates the tables and functions while it codes the app, without me going through the interface. And the free cloud lets you test before setting up a server. Why 8 and not more: it is heavy. You need a server with at least 4 GB of memory, and 19 containers run behind the console. Updates go through a migration tool, not something to do lightly. And if your project fits in a small database, PocketBase does the job with a single file.

Who it is for: You have a web or mobile app on Supabase or Firebase, a server with at least 4 GB, and you want to stop paying for the plan and the usage. For a first backend or a small project, start with PocketBase, it is simpler.

    PocketBase

    🟢 Beginner⏱️ ~5 min to installSave €22/mo

PocketBase is a full backend in a single executable (12 MB to download) that can replace Supabase or Firebase. You run it and you get a SQLite database with realtime subscriptions, a ready-to-use REST API and a dashboard to create your collections without writing SQL. It also handles users (email and password, about fifteen OAuth2 providers like Google or GitHub) and file storage, on your disk or on S3. Your app connects through the JavaScript or Dart SDKs, and your server logic is written as JavaScript or Go hooks. Your data lives in a folder: backing up means copying it, and the dashboard can do it on its own, locally or to S3. MIT license. Worth knowing: the project is carried by a single developer, with no company behind it.

The prompt that installs Appwrite

Paste this prompt into Claude: it checks the repository, asks you its questions and installs the tool step by step.

Review the GitHub repository and check whether it is safe to install given my machine and my infrastructure. Ask me as many questions as possible, using widgets, to clarify my request and be as precise as you can.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Supabase cost?
Free: €0; Pro: from about €22 a month (25 dollars); Team: from about €516 a month (599 dollars); Enterprise: Custom quote. Prices checked on 12 October 2026 on supabase.com.
Is Supabase free?
Partly, with limits. Up to 2 active projects, paused after 1 week of inactivity. 500 MB database, 1 GB of files, 50,000 monthly active users. Beyond that, the Pro plan costs from about €22 a month (25 dollars). Appwrite does the same thing for free, in open source.
Is Appwrite really free?
Yes. Appwrite is open source: the code is public and installing it costs nothing. At most you pay for hosting if you put it on a server, often a few euros a month. Supabase, on the other hand, costs €22 a month.
Do I need to code to install Appwrite?
No. The level is intermediate and the install takes about 20 minutes with the prompt from the page: Claude does the work, you answer its questions.
How is it different from Supabase?
Appwrite does most of what Supabase does, without a subscription, and your data stays with you. The point by point comparison is on the page.
Do I own my data?
Yes. With an open source tool installed on your side, your files stay on your machine or your server. Nobody can close your account or change the price.
